What Is Geofence Attendance?

Geofence attendance is a method of employee time tracking that uses virtual GPS-based boundaries around work locations. When an employee attempts to clock in, the system checks their GPS coordinates against the geofence and only accepts clock-ins from inside the approved area.

How geofence attendance works

  1. Admin draws a geofence around each work location on a map (center + radius)
  2. Employee opens the attendance mobile app
  3. Employee taps "Clock In"
  4. App reads GPS coordinates and captures a selfie
  5. System checks whether the coordinates fall inside the geofence
  6. If yes: clock-in succeeds, all data saved to attendance record
  7. If no: clock-in rejected with reason shown on screen

Frequently asked questions

What is geofence attendance?

Geofence attendance is a method of employee time tracking that uses GPS-based virtual boundaries around work locations. When an employee attempts to clock in, the system verifies their GPS location falls inside the geofence. Clock-ins from outside the boundary are automatically rejected.

How does a geofence work?

A geofence is a virtual perimeter (usually a circle) drawn around a physical location on a map. The admin sets the center point and radius (e.g. 100 meters around the office). Any GPS coordinate inside that boundary counts as "at the location"; any coordinate outside does not.

How accurate is geofence attendance?

Modern GPS attendance is accurate to within 5-15 meters on outdoor phones. For indoor use, the geofence radius should be set slightly larger (100-200 meters) to account for weaker GPS signal. Zilonex also uses cell tower and WiFi triangulation as fallbacks for indoor accuracy.

Can geofence attendance be faked?

Basic GPS can be faked with mock-location apps. Modern geofence attendance systems (including Zilonex) detect and block mock-location spoofing. Combined with selfie photo capture at clock-in, the fraud rate approaches zero.

Does geofence attendance work for remote workers?

Yes, with a configuration option. Zilonex lets admins disable the geofence requirement per employee or team, so remote workers can clock in from anywhere while still recording GPS coordinates as a soft record. On-site workers get strict geofence enforcement.

Does geofence attendance drain phone battery?

No. Modern geofence attendance apps only access GPS at the moment of clock-in — not continuously. Battery impact is negligible (comparable to opening Google Maps once).
